Update on the Canada & U.S. Tariff Environment

Oct 9, 2025 | News

Dear Valued Clients,

The Canada-US trade landscape has seen significant shifts in 2025. We are writing to provide
an update on the current situation relating to tariffs that still remain in effect and the expiration of
the surtax remission order.

Key Recap & Action Items:

1. The Good News: Most US Tariffs Removed Effective September 1, 2025. The Canadian
government repealed the United States Surtax Order, removing tariffs on most goods
previously listed. This was a significant relief for Canadian importers.

2. The Remaining Tariffs: Steel & Aluminum A number of commodities remain subject to
surtax under the Steel & Aluminum surtax order. Details of the affected H/S
classifications can be found here.

3. United States Surtax Remission Order Expires: Goods subject to the remaining
surtax are still eligible for remission under the criteria outlined in Customs Notice 25-19:
United States Surtax Remission Order (2025). This is a temporary order that is set to
expire on December 16, 2025. Retroactive claims up until the December 16 expiration date
are permitted for up to two years after the date of importation.

We will continue to monitor any last-minute government announcements regarding a potential
extension.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss remission options further, please contact our
consulting department.

Sincerely,
Summit Customs Brokers
